On Nov. 25, 2003 a lead gift of $1.53 million was provided by Mr. Steve Schoonover and The Schoonover Foundation of Minden, La.; Mr. Rick Schoonover of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.; and Mrs. Sheri Schoonover Merrow of Uniontown, Ohio. The new stadium will be known as Schoonover Stadium in honor of their parents, Harold (Hal) ’49 and Julia Schoonover of Akron, who have been avid supporters of Kent State for more than 50 years.
Features of the new Schoonover Stadium are:
• Seating that will double the capacity of the current stadium to 1,148 with 200 new chairback seats
• A landscaped plaza, public restroom building, picnic area and entrance gate with display area for historical memorabilia
• Field improvements, including new bullpens, backstop and outfield fence as well as underground drainage and sprinkler system
• Upgraded dugouts for home and visiting teams
• Ticket, concessions and storage building
• Field lighting, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and improved public address system
• Skybox for media and VIPs, along with camera bays adjacent to dugouts and center field
• Paved parking area with improved access and signage
